Not sure how many of you read my post here about saying goodbye to our sweet Great Dane Roxie, but it's been almost three months. She is greatly missed. We've been looking for another dog that has Roxie potential and I think we found just the one... He's a brindle Great Dane and will be coming home with us in just 2 weeks!

This gorgeous salvaged mahogany beauty!! We've been chipping and scraping the layers upon layers of paint off of it for three weeks now with the help of a little Citristrip. Thanks to a lot of work from The Professor, and a savvy eye for a good deal from myself (can you believe I got the thing for $190??!!) We will have a new mantle that does not wreak of 1980s honey oak. Yay!!

A Brief Change of Pace...(and a little ranting too)

Disturbed. I am just disturbed. As our nation increases its consumer awareness regarding food (a big thank you to Michael Pollan and Alice Waters) we, the consumers have been able to turn the food industry around. I am so proud to be an American at times like these, where We the People can truly make a difference.

However, in months of late, my attention has been drawn to a new challenge, a new even more morally disgusting problem. Have you looked at the inside tag of your shirt lately? Do you know where it was made? I can almost guarantee it wasn’t made in the USA. So, why is this a problem you might ask?? Here it is: In the US , the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16. The FSLA also requires that minors not take part in hazardous working conditions. Besides minors, there are a plethora of rules and requirements that protect the worker in the USA. Very few other countries that currently manufacture products have this same protection for their workers. Slave labor, child slave labor, and hazardous working conditions are used in almost any country you might find on the inside tag of your shirt, pants, or Christmas decorations including China, India, Brazil, Bangladesh, Jordan, and Honduras.

Many a watchdog group has made efforts to expose the secrets of the money hungry clothing industry: the International Labor Rights Forum and our own US government, to name a few, but it would appear that consumers aren’t affected by this information…yet. Could it be that the bottom line of cost of the product is more important to us than monetarily supporting slave labor? Could it be that we have become happy in our large suburban homes and continue to shop at the nearest super center to support our lifestyle? Next time you see that adorable item at the store for your little one, consider for a moment that another little one may have made it for her.

Because the past several days have been busy and oh so sad, I felt the need to add a bit of humor...

We are saying goodbye to our sweet, sweet Great Dane, Roxie on Monday morning. She has lived a happy little life with plenty of camping trips, beaches, and visits to the dog park. She has been an excellent companion and guardian. She has made a permanent impression on our hearts (and probably our poor carpets too). Roxie, you will forever be missed.

Occasionally I stumble upon a piece of art that is so captivating, I want to incorporate it into my home. As I was "thumbing" through the pages of the September/October issue of RUE, one such piece caught my eye. It wasn't until the next week that I discovered I actually know the artist. Currently a furniture designer by day and a cardboard master by night, Amber Williams is quite possibly one of the most hilarious, talented people you will ever meet. Hope you enjoy her work as much as I do!

So far, we removed a closet and turned it into an alcove for the dresser.

Replaced all hardware on the dresser.

We love our old farm-house window, and spent a whole day building a crate for it in order to move it safely from CA to NV.

We also replaced the1980's light fixture with this salvaged solid brass lantern. It was quite a beast to hang!

Flower Bomb Light!

I cannot believe that I finished this project! As you probably remember, I was ranting about it in this post here. About half-way through, I almost quit. 1,950 4 cup coffee filters and 120 hot glue sticks later, minus a few fingers from hot glue burns I am finished. It is quite a lovely light, but I do need to purchase a brighter bulb. Again, thanks to Nichole and Kara for the inspiration!

When the light is on, it looks a bit like the smoldering surface of the sun. It adds a warm glow to the whole room.

So, I couldn't help but pin some of these "Ex-Book Worms" on the light. They just add to the flower appeal, don't you think?

Dining Room Fixture

Left over Rice Paper Lanterns + 2000 4" coffee filters + hot glue gun + far too much time= beautiful dining fixture. Thanks so much to the very talented Nichole of Parlour Home and Kara of Kara Paslay Designs for the lovely idea!

So far, I've used approximately 1200 coffee filters.

Hopefully, my finished product will look as lovely as Nichole's (pictured below).

What do you get when you mix Ikea Trollsta Legs from the "as is" section for $1 each, several pieces of wood from our demolished privacy wall that once hid our deck, some rusted metal outdoor tables that a friend discarded, some yellow paint left over from our recent exterior paint job, and a few screws?...Some Funky Fall Planters! My handy hubby and I threw the above ingredients together on Saturday and Voila! Hope you like them.

The saga continues on our huge home renovation project. Last month we tackled the exterior with the help of our amazing painter: the very talented Dave Amptman of Performance Painting . After going through three, yes THREE color choices with our HOA, we both finally agreed on a slate blue with cream trim and a lovely yellow door. We love the result. Hope you do too!

Goodbye Courtland. (More Design Star Rants)

Inspired by their brunch menu, the contestants shined this week!
I could hardly believe my ears when Courtland Bascon, was eliminated from Design Star tonight. Unfortunately he thought that everyone wanted to see another faux finished "Sedona Arizona" colored wall in a dining space (as evidenced in the below photo). WHY COURLAND?? WHY?? Casey, though not eliminated this week, seems to be kept on the show due to her good looks?? Candice Olson made a comment about how she would draw more men viewers to HGtv.

Courtland, you will be dearly missed, but Michael really kicked your tail with that awesome Neo-Baroque mirror a la Anthropologie style. Emily also preformed quite well with her re-purposed plastic flower chandelier (pictured below) spray painted white.

Design Star Recap!

So, I've noticed a lack of press on the blog-o-sphere lately about this season of Design Star. Perhaps this is because Courtland is so clearly HGtv's next Golden Child? Perhaps it was because of Nina's charmingly friendly disposition? Or maybe it's that new song? At any rate, there's been some great design this season! Check out these fantastic rooms:Episode 1: Here is Courtland's first design on DesignStar: the white room challenge, where Nina hung him out to dry and he so gracefully protected her from the judges wrath.
Episode 2: each contestant chose an outfit to interpret into the room (some version of Domino Mag's "Turn This Outfit Into a Room").
Episode Three: Using Musical instruments for inspiration, the contestants were to design an outdoor room/garden retreat.
Episode 4: The contestants were to use flowers as inspiration to design the interior of an apartment.
Episode 5: Contestants designed rooms in a fire station for the NYFD. Alex did a great job this episode with his NYC mural.

Episode 7: Highlighting Kenmore appliances for Sears, contestants styled and designed a kitchen for a photo shoot.

So, "why" you may ask is Episode 6 excluded from this recap? Because it was an epic fail for both teams in my opinion. Two luxury apartments for Donald Trump Jr. were designed, and were both pretty terrible.

Hello friends and followers. If this post had a soundtrack, the music would be ominous. Maybe Beethoven's 5th? We are in the midst of a major move and renovation with a newborn and a preschooler. Need I say more? Due to the state of our kitchen, I very seriously contemplated feeding my four year old a snack from the dog bowl today. (It was a very clean dog bowl, and don't worry, I didn't do it.)I hope to have some lovely before and after photos for your viewing pleasure quite soon, but in the meantime, feast your eyes on this.

Yesterday was my birthday. It was lovely. I received this twiggy table lamp from Z Gallerie. Perfect to add to the baby's room and his lovely little collection of faux-bois.

This led me to further explore the Z gallerie website, evidently a great source if you're in the knock off market! Just look...

New Butterfly installation

So, my sister recently purchased a home which had red toile wallpaper in the foyer that -ahem- was not her taste per se. There were two directions we could have gone 1) Tear the wall paper out and start anew, or 2) create a punk look with the toile wallpaper for a background and black accents. We went with door number two, as tearing out wallpaper is not a very fun task.

I think the result is quite nice.

On the other side of the foyer, not pictured in this video, we hung the Ung Drill frames from Ikea, again with the red toile backdrop that the previous home owners so copiously provided. All in all, she's quite happy now with her foyer.

Crib Hacking that is... We've finally decided on a crib for the new bambino. The look? Sleek. Mod. Cool. Perhaps even a bit, I dunno, metro? Either way, the price tag is only $200-300, and the crib is made of solid wood! I couldn't be happier.

Thanks to this fantastic post by Ohdeedoh, and some very real crib-hacking talent by Morgan and Scott, bloggers (and parents) of The 818 we will soon be the proud owners of such a crib. Many thanks for the inspiration, photos, and instructions!

Affordable DIY Wall Decor

I cannot remember where I found this photo or this lovely idea, but I am loving these decoupaged blocks as wall decor! Seems like they would be perfect for a child's room.

1.Find an old book or encyclopedia with pictures you love from a thrift store.

2.Find some scrap wood, and dice into small squares.

3. Glue book to wood with white glue and trim edges when dry.

This is why a partially open terrarium is perfect for them...it holds moisture in the air. So easy to take care of, these terrariums only need to be misted once every other week.
